The aim of this study was to determine the relation of the femoral bicondylar diameter to intercondylar notch dimensions (width and depth). Antero-posterior normal knee radiographs of 200 subjects were evaluated to determine the femoral bicondylar diameter (FBD), intercondylar depth (IND) and intercondylar width (INW). The mean value for FBD, INW and IND were 8.84cm, 1.50cm and 1.02cm for males and 7.81cm, 1.26cm and 0.92cm for females on the right side respectively. For the left side, the FBD, INW and IND were 8.93cm, 1.54cm and 1.09cm for males and 7 .90cm, 1.30cm and 0.98cm for females respectively. There was weak significant correlation (p...
The study was designed to focus on the variation in dermatoglyphics of randomly selected students of University of Ilorin along gender, ethnic and religious lines. The science of dermatoglyphics has evolved over many years and it has been employed in resolutions of crimes, and identifications of persons. Unilateral digital prints of 215 undergraduate students of University of Ilorin comprising of 137 males and 77 females between ages of 16 and 36 years were studied in the course of this work. The result was analyzed using ANOVA and Chi-Square was used to determine any level of association. P?0.05 was considered significant. The findings of the study indicate that there are gender and age differences in relation to total ridge count and pattern intensity index among the sampled population. However, religion and ethnicity have no significant role in dermatoglyphics indices of the studied population. ...
Throughout history, researchers have been solving medical and other challenging problems, developing new techniques and treatments, and curing diseases - largely by conducting animal experimentation. Animal testing gives researchers the opportunity to control in vivo the genetic and environmental factors that may influence the development of disease and establishment of its complications, and thus gain new information about its handling and treatment in humans. Most experiments are carried out on rodents, though other species with human-like biological characteristics are also used. In this review, an overview of ethical considerations in the use of animals in research, which have become highly topical and contentious, especially in recent times, are presented. The usefulness and contributions of animals in biomedical research are equally highlighted with some historical perspectives....
