Brief history of ASN

The Anatomical Society of West Africa (ASWA) was formed in early 1980’s. The members were mostly from Ghana and Nigeria. At the ASWA conference held in the University of Port Harcourt in 1985, the Nigerian anatomists were encouraged to form its Anatomical Society. This did not take off until 1992 when the first conference of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria (ASN) was held in Bayero University Kano organized by late Prof. P. L. Shukla. The first executive committee included;

The Society reviewed the traditional Anatomy Curriculum to include many areas of applications of Anatomical Sciences at the B.SC, M.SC and PhD levels. This move coincided with the directive from National Universities Commission that ALL courses in Nigerian Universities should review its curriculum towards entrepreneurship to provide employment opportunities.
